Alek Wek in a burgundy satin jumpsuit with elasticized waist detail at St. John Fall 2011.
St. John kicked off fashion week by hosting its first formal New York presentation in their 5th avenue showroom. It's nice to sit and watch a runway show, but presentations are my favorite because they are often like cocktail parties. You end up sipping champagne (Veuve Clicquot at St. John) and chatting with people as you see the clothes up close and feel the fabrics for yourself.

St. John is known for being classic - and sometimes that translates into being staid. But St. John is steadily moving away from that image. The collection included feminine yet tailored sportswear for day and sequins (blouses and skirts) for evening.
Backstage, I spoke with nail tech Pattie Yankee who swept on simple, neutral shades on the models. The more interesting news is that she is collaborating with several designers this year to create signature nail colors that will be exclusive to their boutiques. While the latest trend has found designers going mass market (Target or Wal-Mart, anyone?) others, in consideration of the economy and in an effort to stand out in a tough market, are opting to go more exclusive.
