I attended a celebration for Dr. King at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) this morning. The speakers lineup was full of politicians (Gov. David Paterson, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Nydia Velazquez) and the keynote speaker was Danny Glover. This is the second-most interesting event I have gone to involving Dr. King. My favorite was going to Sotheby's in the summer of 2006 to view an exhibit featuring a collection of treasures from Dr. King including the original draft of his "I Have A Dream Speech," his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and his Nobel Peace Prize lecture and acceptance speeches for both the Oslo, Norway ceremony and the historic integrated dinner in Atlanta that followed.
I would also like to remember and honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King, who died on January 30, 2006, on this day. Here is the tribute I wrote on 55 Secret Street on Dr. King's Day in 2007, Coretta Couture.

Nichelle, you are doing a great job!!! I just discovered your blog! GOD Bless!!! Just in case you didn't know, Dr. Morris Tynes, Margaret Tynes's brother marched with Dr. King, and you can see him standing on the Lincoln Memorial steps on video in the "March on Washington/ I Have A Dream" speech. Also Morris'and Margaret's father, Dr.Joseph Walter Tynes, was pastor at the oldest African-American brick church in North Carolina, Providence Baptist, where Dr. King spoke in Greensboro..so you also have a family connection as well!!!

Hi Kevan!
Obviously you are one of my cousins if you know that much hahaha! I will send you an email.
And, yes indeed, I am very well aware of Aunt Margaret's father and all of her brothers and sisters, including the Rev. Dr. Morris Tynes of Chicago. I have a picture of him with Dr. King in Selma.:)
